I have this mantra…

July 23, 2006 erinstine

Ok, so this is embarassing, although slightly less when I call it a mantra and not ‘this thing that plays over and over in my head.’  When I go running, I wear headphones probably 60% of the time (this is dependent on whether or not I have any AAA batteries).  But those other times, when I am not listening to some sweet sweet tunes, I zone out.  It’s nice, actually – I can tune out all the random stuff I worry about and just space.

But, as I said, I have a phrase that helps me space out.  My mantra.  It is to the beat of my feet hitting the pavement (so it’s pretty slow).  And it goes like this:

go white boy go white boy go

I don’t know why.  I imagine that it is from some song I heard way back (perhaps a Vanilla Ice type something?), but I definitely couldn’t identify it.  I’m not sure why, for me, it’s BOY, except that it’s much more satisfying to have the ‘w’ and ‘b’ sounds back to back, rather than having the ‘w’ at the front of your mouth and then switching to the ‘g’ of GIRL at the back of your throat, especially when breathing hard.

So now you know I’m officially odd.  But other people must have weird things that run through their head too, right?  Say yes.  You can just nod.

When I run (which I desperately need to do again), I usually count along with my breaths. So when I exhale I count 1-2-3-4 and when I inhale I count along with that.

    Not so weird I guess.

I really like that mantra. My running mantra (which is exactly as you described it, an uncontrollable repeating phrase) it’s just slightly exaggerated breathing sounds – breathing out (huh huh huh huh) and in (hu hu hu hu).

Vanilla Ice did the TMNTurtle rap – go ninja go ninja go ninja go … but I bet white boy was an original lyric somewhere.

That’s not so quirky. I can identify because when I run if I don’t have music I end up trying to sync my breathing to my footfalls. Sometimes it gets so out of hand that I end up sprinting to keep up with my breath…..it’s tough!
I also get some cool ideas for my poetry blog when i’m out and about, you might like it http://jamiespencer.wordpress.com
